Lot Essay

The Saltash Bridge, or Royal Albert Bridge, features regularly in Alfred Wallis' paintings, for example, Boats under Saltash Bridge (Royal Albert Bridge), (AW 15) in Kettle's Yard, Cambridge. Alfred Wallis was born in Plymouth in 1855, just a few years before the bridge, which spans the Tamar between Plymouth, Devon and Saltash, Cornwall, was opened in 1859.
