Lot Essay

The present lot is a study for a tapestry that is currently in the Talley Student Center on the campus of the North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina. The university had commissioned the design from Karel Appel in honour of John Tyler Caldwell, the dean of the university from 1959-1975.
