She had some success in her youth as a concert pianist and the money earned enabled her to start painting. After her mother's death in 1863 the family became more reliant on her efforts. It was around this time that she must have first visited the Channel Islands as she exhibited two views of the Islands in 1867 at the British Institution and Society of Female Artists. She visited Jersey on several occasions, drawing inspiration from the stormy weather off the coast for many of her subjects.
