Lot Essay

Les Contes Russes, was choreographed by Léonide Massine for Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. It was an expanded version of an earlier ballet called Kikimora. Set to music by Anatol Liadoff, with vivid sets and costumes by Mikhail Larionov, Les Contes Russes was a popular ballet inspired by Russian folklore, comprising of a wide range of fantastical characters. The ballet premiered in Paris in 1917, giving Larionov exposure in the French capital for the first time (S. Scheijen, Diaghilev: A Life, 2009, p. 329).
