A DOME TOP TRUNK IN STRIPED CANVAS
PROBABLY 1870-80S
Painted metal and brass bound, with metal handles either end, the locks pre-patent, the interior lined in red and white striped paper, with pink ribbon taping to the lid and with fittings for dividers; together with a small, square trunk in striped canvas, lined in purple striped paper
26 x 36.4 x 22.4 in. (65 x 91 x 56 cm.); the small trunk 11 x 16 x 10 in. (28 x 41 x 25 cm.)
The lock stamped with a crown and a lion surmounted by a crown (2)

Lot Essay

Dome top trunks of the late 19th century were transported long distances on the outside of carriages and coaches and were therefore exposed to all weathers. Their rounded lids allowed rain to run off easily, keeping it from collecting, stagnating and ruining the trunk's contents.
