Lot Essay

Kuhnert was a scholarship student at the Royal Academic College of Fine Arts, Berlin from 1883 to 1887. He travelled through Europe into Egypt, into Africa and Asia where he turned his attention to painting wild animals in their natural environment. These sketches capture his fascination with exotic animals, subjects for which is best known as a painter.
