Lot Essay

We are grateful to Anchise Tempestini for confirming Girolamo da Treviso's authorship of this picture based on a photograph (private communication, 26 March 2012). He has in particular pointed to the similarities it shows to the artist's marble reliefs of Jacob's Sons Presenting him with Joseph's Bloodied Cloak and Joseph's Cup Found in Benjamin's Sack, executed for the façade of San Petronio, Bologna (1524). The figure of Eliezer closely compares in typology and drapery style to the Evangelists in the so-called Protestant Allegory in the Royal Collection, Hampton Court, of circa 1542-1544, while the architecture in the background of both pictures is also quite like.
