It was only when the Moueix family bought a half share in 1962 that is true potential began to be fully realized. It is, of course, now known as one of the worlds rarest and most expensive wines.
This magical 11.4 hectare estate is located on a plateau on the highest portion of Pomerol in the far east of the appellation. The topsoil and subsoil at Pétrus almost entirely consist of iron-rich clay that helps Merlot to flourish. The vineyard is planted to 95 Merlot. The vines are unusually old and are only replanted after they reach 70 years of age. This wine has an undeniable mythical quality and an unequalled reputation.
