Lot Essay

Boats in a Storm (Lot 2157) is one of Affandi's most favoured compositions depicting a mountainous landscape on the left of the composition, with the sea stretching from the right of the picture deep into the left side. In some other works with this composition, Affandi paints still beach landscapes of Parangtritis beach in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In the present lot, a boat, vividly painted, is out in the raging sea close to the coast. A sense of immediacy is brilliantly conveyed by Affandi, highly evocative of place and time.
