Ces ornements caractéristiques de la culture marquisienne présentent un décor sculpté traditionnel : une rangée de personnages anthropomorphes géométrisés développant un jeu de pleins et de vides. Nous pouvons comparer cet ensemble à un dessin de Paul Gauguin ayant copié un ornement de ce type (Rubin, 1987, p.193).
