EDWARD I (1239-1307), king of England. Letters patent, Carlisle, 4 April 1307, granting a licence to Walter Langton, Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, to transfer half a bovate of land in Pykhale [Pickhill], Yorkshire, with the benefice of the church, to the master and brothers of St Leonard's Hospital in York, in spite of the statute barring clerics from holding or transferring feudal possessions, in Latin, on vellum, 11 lines on one membrane, 220 x 310mm, later endorsements on verso (some creasing, spotting and staining, seal lacking, torn at seal holes, a few other small puncture holes).
Walter Langton (d.1321) had been treasurer of the exchequer since 1295, and was rewarded in the following year with the bishopric of Lichfield; by the end of Edward I's reign he was the king's closest confidant and virtually first minister, and he was appointed executor on Edward's death just over three months after the present grant.
