The Battle of Leghorn during the First Anglo-Dutch War was a victory for the Dutch Mediterranean fleet under Commodore Johan van Galen, who destroyed a smaller English squadron under Captain Henry Appleton before it could link up with a second English fleet under Captain Richard Bradiley. The present depiction of the battle is attributed by Maria Teresa Lazzarini to the Tuscan court architect, Alfonso Parigi, on the basis of refences in the journal of a local official, the balì Gondi. The journal records the receipt of Parigi's depiction of the battle on 15 March 1653, the day after the battle, making it highly probable that the drawing was executed while the action was actually underway ('si tratta di una illustratzione eseguita mentre il combattimento anglo olandese era in corso').
