One of his finest works, Of Love and Hunger draws on Maclaren-Ross's brief experience of working as a door-to-door vacuum-cleaner salesman in 1938: it was published as his first full-length novel in October 1947 -- the final text showing significant revisions from this early draft. Bill Makins, whom Maclaren-Ross initially encountered as the business manager at Cyril Connolly's Horizon and who later became his 'self-appointed agent', features largely in the author's Memoirs of the Forties, notably in the chapter 'The Double Death of William Cooper Makins', when the writer refers to having left Part One of his 'vacuum cleaner novel' 'in the hands of Makins' (though curiously he also explicitly recalls Makins's wife returning the manuscript to him after a false report of her husband's death in the Western Desert).
