IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LITERARY WORKS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. First editions of volumes 2-8, and first Nouvelle Revue Française edition of volume 1. Proust at first could not find a publisher willing to take a chance on such a substantial work, and so published the first volume at his own costs with Grasset. Gallimard's Nouvelle Revue Française, which had rejected the book on the basis of a hasty reading by André Gide, realized its error and swiftly came to an agreement with Proust. Publication resumed when the Great War of 1914-1918 came to an end, with Gallimard also re-issuing Du Côté de chez Swann in 1919, when Proust was awarded the Prix Goncourt. The final volume was issued posthumously in 1927. Connolly, 100 Key Books of the Modern Movement, 23; En français dans le texte 342. (14)
