BURTON, Richard Francis (1821-1890). The Guide-Book. A Pictorial Guide Book to Mecca and Medina. (Including some of the more remarkable incidents in the life of Mohammed, the Arab lawgiver). London: Printed for the Author by William Clowes & Sons, 1865.
8° (195 x 129mm). Woodcut frontispiece portrait with original tissue guard. Original green printed wrappers, upper side with short title and author's name within black ruled border with small floral device at corners; in a custom green morocco-backed clamshell case (spine worn with small losses, extremities rubbed, upper side with discolouration).
FIRST EDITION. ONE OF BURTON'S RAREST WORKS. Burton prepared and published this rare pamphlet to accompany an exhibition of paintings arranged by the Royal Polytechnic Institution as a 'Pictorial Representation' of his pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, consisting of 'dissolving views' painted mostly from his original drawings. The text corrects errors he made in the 1855-56 account of his daring voyage, and describes the main rites connected with the Hajj, and the life, death and burial of Mohammed. Penzer p. 76; Casada 39; Spink 37.
