DODWELL, Edward (1767-1832). A Classical and Topographical Tour through Greece, during the years 1801, 1805, and 1806. London: Rodwell an Martin, 1819.
2 volumes, 4° (273 x 215mm). Folding engraved map, 66 engraved plates, of which 2 hand-coloured and 6 double-page, numerous wood-engraved illustrations. Errata at the end of vol. II. (Plate 2 with spotting in the inner margin, others with some browning.) Contemporary brown morocco gilt, covers with gilt double-fillet border, spine in six compartments with raised bands, the bands flanked by fillets in gilt and blind, the second and third compartments lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, marbled edges (joints lightly rubbed, upper joint of vol. I slightly split, spines fractionally faded).
A FINE SET OF THE FIRST EDITION. 'Dodwell's travels in Greece covered two periods; he left Trieste in April 1801 in company with Sir William Gell, touring the Ionian Islands and the Troad. Later, in 1805, while a prisoner-of-war of the French, he obtained permission to travel, and, accompanied by the Italian artist Simone Pomardi, he toured mainland Greece and the Ionian Islands' (Blackmer p.108).
