Lot Essay
Morrocco is renowned for his Italian beach scenes which over the years became more and more imbued with a vivid explosion of colour. He travelled to Italy with his family every year and enjoyed observing the Lido atmosphere.
'Beach scenes: I have always been interested in using the human figure and Italy is one of the places you can see it, especially in the summer. One of the reasons I go to Italy quite a lot is because of that very reason. You can see that almost nude human figure against the setting of the sea. This is almost a social comment about the lido atmosphere that you see in beaches in Italy'('Alberto Morrocco', Talking Pictures, Scottish Television, 1992).
MacMillan comments: 'These paintings are often touched with humour, and the composition is simplified to allow his delight in it all to shine through unencumbered' (Duncan MacMillan, The Independent, 14 March
1998).
