The Beatles
A rare collection of colour separation proofs for Richard Avedon's psychedelic portraits of the Beatles for Look magazine, 1968, the collection, used by Look magazine's Art Director, Allen Hurlburt, comprises:
- twenty individual colour separations for the portraits of each Beatle, comprising John Lennon (7); George Harrison (6); Paul McCartney (5); and Ringo Starr (5), all -- 13¾x10¼in. (34.9x26cm.);
- a three-colour separation of John Lennon signed and dated by Richard Avedon in black ballpoint pen Avedon '68 -- 13½x10¼in. (34.3x26cm.);
- two copies of the final printed Look magazine, January 9, 1968 (26)

Lot Essay

These colour separations would have been used by Art Director at Look Magazine, Allen Hurlburt, and photographer, Richard Avedon, in the development of the final images used on the front cover of Look magazine and for the posters produced by mail order.

Allen Hurlburt was Art Director at Look from 1956 to 1971 and in 1973, both Hurlburt and Richard Avedon received the American Institute of Graphic Arts gold medal.
