Représentant dans un paysage lacustre et montagneux, un grand éléphant blanc debout, barissant, se tenant devant un arbre aux branches tortueuses auxquelles s'accroche un jeune homme tentant d'échapper aux flammes, serpents et dragons placés sous lui, un moine, un dignitaire et deux serviteurs observant la scène du haut d'un promontoire rocheux, signature à trois caractères Sima Kou et trois cachets, passe-partout en soie ; petites restaurations, déchirures et petites traces d'humidité

Lot Essay

The present lot is painted in the Song dynasty style and the signature reads Sima Kou, this artist is listed in the directory as a Song dynasty artist who specialized in Buddhist, ghost and figure paintings. This painting may represent a Buddhist allegory, depicting a hunter going up a tree to save himself from an angry elephant. Above him, two mice embodying night and day are biting the branch which symbolizes the fragility of life. The man is being attacked by bees at the same time, these latter referring to the evil thinking.
