Lot Essay

The bear was a symbol of courage. The Bear of the fifth rank and Lion of the second rank are often easily confused in the iconography of mandarin badges. But, as in this instance, the bear is distinguished by having a straight, rather than curly, mane and no curves at the end of its tail.
