THE PROPERTY OF A LADY
Georges Braque (1882-1963)
An important member of the avante garde movement of the early 20th century and famed for his development of Cubism with Picasso. Although Braque is most widely known for his still-life paintings, towards the end of his life Braque longed to translate the major themes of his works into three-dimensional art objects. In collaboration with Baron Heger de Lowenfeld; lapidary, gem cutter and entrepreneur, Braque was finally able to realise this ambition.
Their partnership began in 1961, and Braque was delighted with the 'Metamorphosis' of his artistic ideas into tangible objects. The themes of Braque's jewels were taken from his lithographs and graphic works, the essence of which was concentrated to produce what were intended to be wearable miniature sculptures of simple yet striking design. On March 21st 1963 an exhibition entitled 'One hundred jewels by Georges Braque' was opened at the Pavillon Marsan. An unqualified success, its run was extended with over 50,000 people attending and the French state purchasing eleven pieces.
