An unusual late 19th Century silver-mounted mottled grey and red granite inkstand
of circular form, the centre applied with a compressed circular inkwell, the foliate-decorated cover inset with a citrine, the sides applied with six engraved shields with basket-hilted swords, apparently unmarked - 9in. (22.75cm.), on an ebonised wood plinth with a cartouche with presentation inscription and with a glass dome, offered with a letter to the original recipient, John Norman Esq., from V.T. Lewis of Dene Hollow, Burgess Hill, Sussex, dated 21st August 1899, the letter as follows: "My Dear Sir, I did not sufficiently thank you for the great service you rendered me on the night of 24th July last, when you so courageously extinguished the fire in my drawing room & thus - I am convinced - saved my house & the contents from utter destruction. As a slight token of my appreciation of your invaluable services on that occasion, I venture to send you an inkstand made up in Scotch silver & granite and beg your kind acceptance of same. I wish you, & all yours, every prosperity and good luck, & shall always consider myself your grateful & obliged V.T. Lewis".
