Lot Essay

This group is inspired by the famous Madonna of Trapani and was probably a souvenir of a pilgrimage to Trapani. The present lot has an S-shaped posture, a late gothic posture which came into fashion in the 1430's. The Madonna of Trapani, an impressive 14th century group attributed to Nino Pisano stands perfectly straight. Most Trapani Madonna's follow the original more closely, but the present group does follow all the other features of the original such as drapery and positioning of the child.
