Lot Essay

This is a period copy after the unfinished portrait of George Washington, The Athenaeum Portrait, dated 1796, by Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (inv. no. 1980.1). The portrait became very popular and was immediately copied by numerous artists. Stuart himself also painted many versions.
George Washington suffered from dental problems all his life and he is known to have had countless sets of false teeth, including one made from ivory. This iconic image of Washington has appeared on the United States one-dollar bill since 1869, although due to the printing process the portrait on the dollar bill is a mirrored image of the original. Washington's bust can also be publicly admired on various U.S. Postage stamps.
