LIMITED EDITION, number 89 of 250 copies on vélin of a total edition of 306 copies SIGNED BY MAX ERNST. In the early 1920s, Max Ernst, the surrealist artist Max Ernst began to create images such as those seen in Histoire Naturelle by rubbing textured surfaces. Ernst coined the term frottage (French for "rubbing") for this kind of art form and has since been credited as its inventor. Spies & Leppien 222 (1972 reprint of this edition).
