A FINE TAYLOR ALS FROM HIS LONG MILITARY CAREER. "Enclosed," he writes Jones, who was then the Adjutant General of the Army, "you will receive an application addressed through me from Maj. Foster 6th Infantry on the subject of a furlough, accompanied by documents numbered 1, to 4, in support of his application." A career Army man, Taylor entered the service in 1808 and fought in the War of 1812, the Black Hawk War, the Second Seminole War and most famously in the Mexican War, where he was the victor at the battle of Monterrey. He resigned his commission in 1848, after 40 years of service, when he ran for president successfully against Lewis Cass and Martin Van Buren.
