SPENCER, Herbert (1820-1903). A collection of approximately 92 letters signed (a few autograph) to various recipients, 20 March 1851 - 4 May 1902, the majority (74 letters) to his publisher Appleton, discussing publication details of his collected essays (1891), the revised Social Statics (1892), The Principles of Ethics (1897) and other works, the remainder on subjects including his opposition to the Boer War, to biography, and to socialism ('We are on a way to a form of social organization which ... will probably end in a tyranny of universal officialism') and on other controversies; with three cabinet photographs (one signed).
