Lot Essay

Similar in scale, technique and composition to Christ and the Woman of Canaan in the collection of Louis-Antoine Prat (P. Rosenberg, Dessins français de la collection Prat XVIIe-XVIIIe-XIXe siècles, exhib. cat., Paris, Louvre, and elsewhere, 1995, no. 22). A picture of this subject, now untraced, was listed in Chéron's posthumous sale; London, 26 February 1726, lot 66 (F. Russell, 'Louis Chéron: a sale catalogue', The Burlington Magazine, CXXX, June 1988, p. 466).
