Lot Essay

Close in style and composition to a drawing by Bol of the same subject in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. 9906; W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, New York, 1979, vol. I, no. 255). The present sheet appears to be a development of the Vienna drawing and can be dated to the same period, in the latter half of the 1640s.

We are grateful to Peter Schatborn for confirming the attribution on examination of the original.
