Lot Essay

Kenilworth Castle was a popular subject for Cox: an early view, dated to circa 1807, is in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery; an 1830 watercolour is in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight; and a late view is in Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery (S. Wilcox, Sun, Wind, and Rain - The Art of David Cox, 2008, p. 146, no. 5 and figs. 94 and 95). The present watercolour dates from the 1830s.
