Lot Essay

Horace Walpole's celebrated Gothic Revival villa 'Strawberry Hill', Twickenham, which he made 'great additions and improvements' to using a variety of original Gothic architectural features between 1747 and 1790, was acquired in 1923 by The Catholic Education Council, for use by St Mary's Teaching Training College. Increasingly less suitable for modern teaching purposes or as residential accommodation, Strawberry Hill was opened to the public in 1992.
