Lot Essay

In Memoirs of the Life of David Cox Solly records that 'Cox and his son, having spent the first week of their 1829 tour in Calais, took the diligence to Amiens and remained there for two days, sketching the cathedral from the citadel, the Rue de Cond, and other subjects' (London, 1873, p. 64). From Amiens they walked to Beauvais and intended to walk on to Paris but were thwarted by very hot weather so took a coach.

A watercolour of the Cathedral was sold in these Rooms, 5 June 2005, lot 71.
