Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the sheet of studies of a hound's back leg may be by Henry Landseer, the uncle of Thomas, Charles and Edwin. He was an engraver, whose works included a set of engravings for John Flaxman's Anatomical Studies of the Bone and Muscles for the use of Artists, 1833. Alternatively 'H.L.' could stand for hind leg or some reference to the dissection. Susan Owens, loc.cit. attributes the Study of the horse's head and the three studies of the hind leg of an écorché dog to Edwin Landseer.
