Lot Essay

The composition of the present drawing owes much to Gainsborough, although it probably shows de Wint capturing a scene he recognised to be Gainsborough-like, rather than basing his watercolour on any particular drawing or painting by the older master. John Ellis points out that the landscape is characteristic of the Lincolnshire Middle Marsh, a flat region marked by shallow bodies of water and pollarded willows.
