Lot Essay

The shield is of twelve quarters some sub-divided, and "over all" - in the centre - is a shield of two coats "impaled" - side by side. The following quarters have been identified: No.6. Campoo; No.8. Enriquez; No.11. Blazquez; No.12. Castano. Above the shield, the helmet of a marquess, full face with seven grilles; a ducal coronet on the helmet, a true crest, an eagle issuant from the coronet in front of a plume of five feathers. Behind the shield is the red cross of the Military Order of Calatrava, surrounded by the collar of the Spanish Order of Charles III, from which hangs the Grand Cross of the order. The insignia of the following orders hang beneath the shield: left to right. No.1. unidentified. No.2. Star of the Constantinian Order of St George. No.4. Cross of the Portuguese Order of Christ. No.5. Probably the Cross of the Spanish Order of St Ferdinand. No.6. Cross of the French Legion of Honour, but crowned, so probably from the era of the Second Empire, 1852-70.
