Lot Essay

One of the most important followers of Antoniazzo Romano and Piermatteo d'Amelia, the artist identified by Federico Zeri as The Master of the Liverpool Madonna reaches his highest level of expression in small- scale devotional paintings. Other versions of this type, with some compositional differences, are recorded in the files of the Fondazione Federico Zeri.
This painting is sold with a letter of expertise from Filippo Todini. We are grateful to Everett Fahy for independently confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
