Lot Essay

Albert Johansson was born in Stensele Socken, a small village in northern Sweden. He left ran away from boarding school at the age of 13 from which time he had to become self-sufficient, it was several years later when he would be inspired to venture into the world of art during a visit to the local library. Albert Johansson produced some of his most renowned works in the 1960s while he explored divergent aspects of our reality by plunging into our everyday society. Mapping of mechanisms and ceremonial actions that control our everyday life became the main focus of his works and were expressed in his matrix paintings and mask works, such as the mask panel here offered. Related mask-works are illustrated and discussed in, Kristina Mezei, Albert Johansson, Simrishamn, 1981, pp 38 - 41.
