Lot Essay

The first portrait resembles a chalk on blue paper portrait by Dahl of a man traditionally called 'Mr Reed', in the Pierpont Morgan Library (see Master Drawings, XI, Spring 1973, pp. 39-40). Another blue paper drawing by Dahl of Edward Harley, Second Earl of Oxford, is in the British Museum.
