Lot Essay

In August 1832, Stanfield and his wife and son, travelled from Calais to St. Malo via Dieppe and Caen. A number of his watercolours from this tour were engraved for Heath's Picturesque Annual for 1834 (see Pieter van der Merwe, The Spectacular Career of Clarkson Stanfield 1793-1867, exhibition catalogue, Tyne and Wear County Council Museums 1979, no. 194, p. 122).
