Lot Essay

The inscription at the front of the base is in Kharosthi, the written alphabet of Gandhara, and reads Budhamitrasa danamukhe. Roughly translated, the inscription proclaims this piece as a "Gift of Buddhamitra," a name common among extant Kharosthi inscriptions.
