The lower part with three vertically divided 18th-century bevelled mirror plates, the painting depicting a view of a Dutch canal with carriages and elegant figures in the foreground, the reverse chalked ?Dec 8. 37 and Oakover, the frame reduced to fit the canvas

The inscription Oakover on the backboards may refer to Okeover Hall, the Palladian country house in Staffordshire mostly built 1745-49.
