Lot Essay

As one of the smaller group of male novelists, Moore seems to have specialised in delineating the passions rather than the feelings. He also wrote Theodosius de Zulvin; The Monk of Madrid (1802), The Courtesan; An English tale, an illustration of the passion of revenge (1808), The Married Man; An English tale, in which is attempted an illustration of the passion of jealousy (1811) and Tales of the Passions (1814). Grasville Abbey appears to have been his second novel, following on from Society and Manners published much earlier in 1779. ESTCm records a 2-volume edition published in Cork and another in Dublin, both in 1798, and even a Salem, Massachussets, edition of 1799, but no copy of the first edition.
