Arita ware, Kokutani type, Edo period (late 17th century)
The double gourd-shaped shallow dish decorated in polychrome enamels with a freely painted Chinese lion chasing a flaming jewel amongst peony flowers and clouds, the underside decorated in underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze polychrome enamels with the "Three Friends of Winter" motif of pine, bamboo and plum, iron-red fuku mark on base, the rim glazed in iron oxide
