A CARVED RED LACQUER RECTANGULAR BOX AND COVER
MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY
The cover is well carved with a procession of scholars and attendants approaching a pavilion in which sits an official below two women seen through a window above. The sides of the box are carved with branches of camellias and prunus reserved on a diaper ground, and there are bands of keyfret at the rims. The black-lacquered interior is fitted with a shallow tray that sits on supports at the corners.
