A LARGE CARVED RED LACQUER HU-SHAPED VASE
19TH CENTURY
The sides are carved in relief with a continuous scene of deer in a landscape setting, representing the 'Hundred Deer' motif, below an Imperial poem on the neck that is flanked by a pair of metal stag-head handles. There is a thin layer of lacquer on the interior. A Qianlong six-character mark is chased within a rectangle in the center of the gilt-metal base.

Compare the similar vase, also with metal stag-head handles, carved with a scene of Xiwangmu and attendants, and with a chased six-character dated Qianlong mark written in Manchu, sold in these rooms, 21 September 2004, lot 83 and again in our Hong Kong rooms, 28 November 2006, lot 1706.
