A HUANGHUALI THRONE-FORM DRESSING CASE, BAOZUOSHIJINGTAI
The small dressing case is constructed to resemble a throne, with a tall back and two arms which are supported on a small case with two tiers of drawers. The shaped back frame, with arched spandrels that terminate in dragon heads, is divided into panels of openwork carving with magpies on a flowering plum branch in the top panel, and an elegant phoenix in the central panel, which is flanked by panels carved in openwork with blossoming sprays. The side panels are carved in openwork with stylized dragons framed within arched top rails that end in dragon heads. The case is carved with blossoming plum sprays held within shaped cartouches on the drawers and sides. The whole cabinet is raised on a short stand with shaped aprons and cabriole legs.
