Lot Essay

Francis Bedford was a British artist and photographer who accompanied Edward VII, then the Prince of Wales on a tour of the Middle East visiting Egypt, Jerusalem, Damascus, Beirut and Constantinople. The tour was organised by Edward's mother Queen Victoria, shortly after the death of his father, Prince Albert. Upon his return, Bedford produced an album of photographic plates to commemorate the trip.
