Gouache heightened with gold on paper, Shah Jahan rides an elephant which is being attacked by a lion, a large hunting party on horseback and on foot surround the lion, set against a rocky landscape punctuated with lakes, in black ruled margins

Lot Essay

A similar scene in the Metropolitan Museum of Art depicting Shah Jahan out hunting which is probably slightly earlier than our present painting is also attributed to Mewar (Steven Kossak, Indian Court Painting, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1997, no. 50, p. 86-87).
