Lot Essay

The nine-storey Whampoa Pagoda was built by Emperor Wanli around 1600 and was one of the 'eight beautiful scenes' of Canton. It became a navigational landmark for shipping approaching the busy anchorage at Whampoa. Dahuangjiao Fort was situated in the Macao Passage and guarded the mouth of the Pearl River, protecting Canton.

For variants of these subjects by Youqua, see Christie's London, 13 July 2006, lot 108.
