HENRICUS HONDIUS (1597-1651)
Nova totius terrarum orbis geographica ac hydrographia tabula. [Amsterdam: Johan Jansson and Henricus Hondius], 1630 [but 1633 or later]. Double-page hand-coloured engraved map, heightened in gilt, German text on verso (margins slightly soiled, fold repaired on verso, several mounting strips adhering to margins of verso), 458 x 576mm.

The new Jansson-Hondius world map, included in all issues of the Mercator atlas from 1633 until 1658, followed Speed and his contemporaries in representing California as an island. The redrawing of north-east Canada, with 'Queen Anne's forland' (Baffin Island) shown completely encircled by open water, is a new feature. Despite still showing a huge imaginary south land, part of the North Australia coast-line is introduced, making this THE EARLIEST DATED MAP TO RECORD DUTCH DISCOVERIES IN AUSTRALIA.
